USM raises curve with paperles

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) welcomed 4,043 new undergraduates yesterday under a paperless registration system.

Vice-chancellor Tan Sri Professor Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said there were no forms involved in the registration this year and undergraduates only had to bring their MyKads to register and check into their hostels.

"That is why the campus is not as busy as in previous years," he said at the university's Dewan Utama Pelajar.

Among the 4,043 new faces at USM's main campus were 54 international students from China, Nigeria, Indonesia, South Korea, the United States, Iran and Saudi Arabia; 17 cultural students and three sports students from Malaysia.

Dzulkifli said the cultural and sports students were accepted through a special selection process.

Among them was national gymnast Wan Siti Haniza Wan Izahar, 20, who represented Malaysia in the Gymnastics World Cup in 2005, 2007 and 2009 in Portugal and Belarus; 2007 Sea Games in Korat, Thailand; and 2009 Gymnastics World Championship in Japan.

sexy lingerie The Selangor-born Wan Siti Haniza, who will be pursuing a degree in communications, said she had always wanted to further her studies to the tertiary level.

She chose USM in Penang after hearing good things about its campus environment and communications programme.

"I have heard that Penang is a nice place and USM offers its undergraduates a great study environment.

"I am happy to be accepted here," Wan Siti Haniza said, adding that she would also begin coaching budding gymnasts during her time here.

Another undergraduate who fell in love with Penang is Zhu Wei bin, 20, from Guilin, China, who first entered USM to study English in 2008 after finishing his high school education in China.

While he was here the last time, he also became a part-time model.

"When I returned home, I realised that I wanted to pursue a degree in computer science at USM.

"As I like Penang very much, I applied to the university again," said Zhu, who wants to follow in his elder sister's footsteps into the information technology field.

Meanwhile, USM's health campus in Kelantan saw 708 medical, Replica Longines Watches health sciences and dental students enrolling, while its engineering campus in Nibong Tebal welcomed 535 new undergraduates.
