ENGINE TROUBLE FAILS TO STALL

IT can be a nightmare waiting for that engine part to arrive - but it's not something worrying the air ambulance.

The life-saving charity has borrowed an entire engine for its new helicopter.

Mechanics have shipped over a complete replica from manufacturers in France after concerns the existing engine might have problems. The "check-engine" light in the cab of the chopper came on during the week, leading flight staff to keep the aircraft on the ground for a check over.

The engine has now been removed so all the components can be looked at.

Oil from the monster Dauphin N2 engine which powers the charity's new chopper is also being closely checked to see if miniscule traces of metal might be floating in it.

Great North Air Ambulance spokeswoman Sarah Booth said: "It's very different to when your 'check engine' light comes on in the car.

"The aircraft can't legally fly when it comes on.

To switch it off again you virtually have to take the whole engine out, as a safety precaution.

"We will use this engine until the original is returned.

"It is actually more common than you might think to take out the engine. In the lifetime of a helicopter it will usually have quite a few.

"There was a period this week when we were without an aircraft because our other helicopter is having its compulsory three-week annual ser vice.

"We've been lucky enough to get an engine across from France so we could get straight back into the skies.

"That's why the helicopters are designed like this, so they can still be used."

The helicopter was returned to service this week ensuring the region had air cover over the weekend. The chopper started saving lives within days of its launch last month, attending a severe crash on the A19, where two males had to be air-lifted to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The car the pair were travelling in is understood to have flown up to 20ft in the air when it lost control, near the Dalton Park turn off, Sunderland.

It is understood one of the casualties has been discharged from James Cook Hospital, Teesside, but the other remains under the care of the medics. A spokesperson for the charity said: "Our new helicopter is bigger than we have ever had before, which allows our doctor more room to work on a patient in flight, if necessary, "It also offers a more stable platform for medical treatment, which is why it would be such a blow to lose it from service for any considerable time.

"Luckily the company who provided us with the aircraft have been able to help us source a new helicopter and we have been able to keep our flying A&E in the sky for the weekend."
