In Iraq, corruption unabated

The Iraqi judiciary is corrupt. This is not because any particular judge is dishonest but because an independent and impartial Iraqi judge making decisions against the leadership of Iraq is very likely to end up dead.

As director of the CPI, Radhi spent more than two years trying to bring justice to the people. When Radhi refused to follow orders to stop investigating al-Maliki's allies, al-Maliki tried to have Radhi removed politically. When that failed, attempts on his life began. Some members of the OAT team and other State Department and Department of Justice officials helped Radhi and his lieutenants anyway. We were blacklisted by the embassy for doing so. Finally, members of Congress including Reps. Henry Waxman, Tom Lantos and Sen. Judd Gregg pressured Ambassador Ryan Crocker into assisting the CPI families in Baghdad, and these refugees were granted asylum.

Caught up in the fervor of World War II, two young Buffalo-area women decided to add a personal send-off to a Bell P-39Q Airacobra they helped build for Bell Aircraft Co.

Incredibly, the plane still carried those two legible signatures - - written in pencil.

Shocking all involved in the plane's conservation for the Ira G. Ross Aerospace Museum in HSBC Arena, the names and addresses of the two young "Rosie the Riveters" -- Helen Rose and Eleanor Barbaritano -- were found perfectly preserved inside the plane.

While Porter Town Historian Suzanne Simon Dietz has worked tirelessly to track the two young Bell employees from World War II - - and has been successful in finding several members of the Barbaritano family -- Rose's fate remains a mystery.

And the very fact that these names and addresses survived may never be explained.

"It stuns us," said Hugh Neeson, director of development for the Ross Aerospace Museum.

"And there are other marks in this plane done in pencil -- inspector's marks, for example -- and they survived. It's probably because the plane was near the Arctic Circle, in very cold, fresh, unpolluted water. To us, this is remarkable."

Neeson said he had heard of other women who had signed their names in other locally built planes, compelling him to alert the staff to the possibility as they painstakingly conducted their conservation work.

"And a short time later, they came to me and said, 'How's this?,' " he recalled with a chuckle.

Workers had found Rose's signature on the left portion of the instrument panel near the light control switches in the cockpit, and, Neeson said, "it really stands out."

"Eleanor Barbaritano's signature was found in the back of the plane on a 4-by-4-inch cover to a relay box, near the radios," he added. "If you tilt it just right, you see the signature and address.

"This gives an added human dimension to the story of the plane. Here were these two young girls who knew these planes they were working on were going far and wide, and they signed their names to see what would happen."

It's an observation as true of the 21st century as of the 16th. Think Tony Blair. Think George W Bush.

But you won't get any of that sort of thing from Rolf Harris. Rolf is among my earliest memories.

I can see him now on television in the 1960s, when he was younger than I am now. He had the same v-shaped beard, only it was black rather than King Lear white.

He was a painter. Not a Michelangelo sort of painter but a cheerful chap wielding a brush you could paint a house with. He'd daub random blobs of black paint on a big sheet of paper.

The challenge was to see where the painting was going. Where it seemed to be going was nowhere. But then suddenly an image swam out of it. It became a picture of a grasshopper or a girl drinking milk. I thought it was brilliant. I suspect I still would.

Rolf's continued to paint. A few years ago he did a portrait of the Queen. The critics scoffed but the Queen apparently liked the way he'd captured her smile. That's typical of sunny Rolf. He doesn't do dark.

But it's not for his painting that Rolf has become known and rich. It's for his music.

His signature song is no Mozart aria. It consists of the last words of a stockman dying somewhere in the outback.

Dear Tom and Ray: I am interested in purchasing a vintage/ classic ice-cream truck such as the Divco for a new, gourmet-ice- cream truck venture. Ray: Yeah. Maybe you can buy a truck from some other nutjob who tried this same idea and recently gave up? If you're lucky, it even might still have the ice cream in it!

Ray: And then, when you restore it, the most important thing is to make sure it's safe. Obviously, a good suspension system and working brakes top the list. You won't sell much ice cream in a neighborhood where you regularly run over the kids.

Tom: And then you want to make sure you have refrigeration that you can count on. You can do as much or as little aesthetic work as you like. You'll obviously paint the outside to advertise your business.

Ray: And then you have to make a decision about the engine. If it's in decent shape, even if it's old and burning a little oil, you may just decide to leave it as is. After all, I'm guessing most Replica Corum Watches of your driving will be local.
